Week 117 Spotlight: Southern accents and butt jokes

Last week, the brilliant Chris Kirkman was on the show sharing his theories on the new season of Lost (and bossing our dynamic duo around). This week, Joel Murphy and Lars are sans Kirkman, so they are back to their old shenanigans, which include funny accents and “blue” humor.

They are also back to doing what they do best – arguing about movies. They have two movie lists to break down – Moviefone’s top 25 action films and Empire Online’s list of the 50 worst films of all time. It should come as no surprise that they completely disagree with the rankings in both lists and aren’t shy about sharing their opinions.

This week, we are shaking things up a bit. In honor of Lost’s impending final season, Joel Murphy and Lars have invited Chris Kirkman, HoboTrashcan’s resident Lost expert, on to discuss the show. Ben Linus himself, Michael Emerson, described Kirkman’s recaps as “one of the smartest articles I’ve ever read about what goes on on our show,” so needless to say, the guy knows what he’s talking about.

Week 115 Spotlight: George Lucas is impotent

As Avatar continues to break box office records, it encourages other films to incorporate 3D visual effects in order to capitalize on this latest trend. And since George Lucas never met a dollar he didn’t like, he is already on record saying that James Cameron’s revolutionary film is “a new impetus” to rerelease his original Star Wars films in 3D.

Since Joel Murphy and Lars hate 3D effects and are tired of Lucas’ greed, you can imagine how nonplussed they are about Hollywood’s obsession with the third-dimension. They also aren’t too pleased with Noodles and Company and criminals posing as Batman.

Week 113 Spotlight: With a side of mayo

It’s a proven fact that Jay Leno ruins everything. After tainting the once great Tonight Show with stale, predictable jokes, Leno went on to host his own 10 p.m. talk show, sabotaging Conan O’Brien’s chances for success in the process. Leno in primetime proved to be ratings poison, but NBC has continued to stand by their man.

Now, TMZ is reporting that Leno will get his old 11:30 time slot back and Conan, who has been screwed over at every turn, will be kicked to the curb. Needless to say, Joel Murphy and Lars are not pleased with this news and they aren’t shy about sharing their feelings on this latest development.

Most kids secretly dream of being Batman, so its ironic that the man who played the Dark Knight for the past 18 years grew up having no clue who Batman was.

Still, it seems like a role Kevin Conroy was destined to play. Like Bruce Wayne, Conroy’s unique childhood left him feeling isolated from his peers until he found his true calling and got his life back on track.

For Conroy, that calling was acting. He graduated from Juilliard and pursued a career in theatre and television before landing the role of Batman on Batman: The Animated Series. Since then, he has played the character in a variety of television shows, video games and movies, including the recently released Batman: Arkham Asylum and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

As you have no doubt already figured out, there is a formula to these Hobo Radio podcasts. Every week, John Cleese plugs The Podcast Network. Then we play a funny soundbite. After that, our funky music starts up. For the first time in history, the Los Angeles Times ran a front-page ad that was made to look like a legitimate news story, a move which upset readers and journalists alike. The ad in question was for the NBC show Southland and it was laid out to look like a news article written by a reporter who completed a ride-along with one of the show’s main characters.

This week, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle take a look at this controversial decision and what it might mean for the future of print journalism. They also talk about advertising on DVDs, which is getting out of control. Somehow, they also find the time to discuss The Office and the new Batman video game, Arkham Asylum.

Week 81 Spotlight: Radio killed the radio star

Driving from Boston to Virginia, Joel Murphy had a chance to sample the radio stations in several states and unfortunately he discovered that they all play the same exact music. From Jason Mraz to Lynyrd Skynyrd to George Michael, the same exact songs by the same artists kept cropping up over and over again in every state. Murphy believes that market research and a lack of creativity have ruined radio.

Meanwhile, Lars Periwinkle is dealing with his own problems – namely, the DMV. Periwinkle went into the DMW to fix what should have been an easy problem and left there five hours later with nothing resolved.

Between his Tonight Show appearance and the countless press conferences and prime-time preemptions, President Obama has been all over television lately. Joel and Lars can’t help at times but feel like the President is acting more like a celebrity on a press tour than the most powerful man in the entire world. Week 79 Spotlight: You can’t do that on television

In this post-Janet Jackson “Nipplegate” world, there are joyless organizations like the Parents Television Council that watch hours and hours of television, seeking out shows that offend them. Then, these organizations write letters to the FCC, complaining about the content of the shows that they only watched in the first place because they were hoping to find offensive content.

The latest show to find itself in PTC’s crosshairs is Family Guy. According to the organization, this past Sunday’s episode of the Fox cartoon “treated viewers to everything from an ‘eleven-way’ gay orgy to baby Stewie eating a bowl of cereal with horse sperm instead of milk … if that isn’t enough, the show’s leading character is also shown fanaticizing about his wife and moaning while a horse licks his bare behind. Clearly, the explicit content was not isolated to one instance in one segment of the show; it permeated the entire program.” Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle discuss Family Guy and the PTC’s complaints in this week’s show.

Week 77 Spotlight: Why so serious?

After seeing a preview for the new Robert Downey Jr./Jamie Foxx movie The Soloist, a film about a white journalist who befriends a homeless African American musician, Lars Periwinkle felt the film appears to be another example of what is often referred to as the “magical negro” phenomenon in movies. A “magical negro” is an African American character who mysteriously appears in a film with the sole purpose of aiding a white character along in his journey. This week, Lars and Joel examine this trend and attempt to figure out why it is so prevalent in movies.

Week 62 Spotlight: Do you believe in magic?

In his latest publicity stunt, David Blaine suspended himself upside down for 60 hours, then did a “dive of death” in front of a live crowd. Only he didn’t actually hang upside down for 60 straight hours; he took 10 minute breaks every hour. And he used a harness for his “dive of death,” which stopped him from falling well before he reached the ground. The stunt was capped off with him “flying away” while still attached to the harness.

While the stunt only earned ABC 7.7 million viewers for the night, clips from the two-hour special surfaced on the Internet and news outlets gave Blaine the publicity he was so desperately speaking. Even Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle can’t resist talking about him on this week’s show, even though they both agree that the guy needs to stop doing these ridiculous and unsatisfying stunts.

Week 32 Spotlight: Our triumphant return.

On February 22, due to technical difficulties, Hobo Radio went off the air.

Most loyal listeners presumed Brian and Joel had “pulled a Bubby” and would never be heard from again. But this week, they make their triumphant return.

Is the magic still there? What were the real reasons for their hiatus? And what, exactly, is a RoboTron 4000? The answers to these questions and more lie within this week’s Hobo Radio podcast.

Since I moved to Boston, we have been having some audio problems and the sound quality just hasn’t been up to our normal standards. So, for now, we are on hiatus while we try to work out the kinks, but hopefully we will be back on the air soon.

Week 31 Spotlight: The single life.

Many things have changed since the last Hobo Radio podcast. The world lost Anna Nicole Smith. Britney Spears lost her hair. And Brian Murphy lost his damn mind.

That’s right, Murphy has snapped – it seems he’s actually happy to be married. The man who has cautioned others about walking down that aisle and who has claimed he’s “already dead” is now saying that he’s lucky to be married.

What caused this shocking turn of events? Why did Joel Murphy make his girlfriend push his car? And what big music news is reported first on their show? These answers and more are found in this week’s edition of Hobo Radio.

Week 30 Spotlight: A tale of two cities.

On the surface, it might not seem like San Antonio, Texas and Boston, Massachusetts have a lot in common, but they definitely share one common trait – the ability to overreact to minor situations.

It seems San Antonio completely shut down recently because it was cold, leaving Brian Murphy trapped in Texas with nothing to do, which is never a good idea. Meanwhile, Boston was sent into a panic over light boxes featuring cartoon characters, leaving Joel Murphy highly amused.

Can Brian really control the weather? Did someone really call a press conference to discuss 1970s hairdos? What would a modern rendition of the Super Bowl Shuffle sound like? Find out the answers to these questions and more on this week’s show.

Week 29 Spotlight: The idiot box.

Supposedly, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but if you are a TV junkie like the Murphy brothers, then there is no time like the present.

Both the NFL playoffs and the hit television show 24 were on the air this past weekend and Brian and Joel were glued to their TV sets. Brian even got his wife to stop playing video games long enough for him to enjoy “Marty Ball” at it’s finest.

What game does Joel play while waiting for Jack Bauer to eat another terrorist? Do the New Orleans Saints really get a bye next week? And what would the podcast sound like if it was done by chipmunks? Find out the answers to these questions and more on this week’s show.

Week 28 Spotlight: Cha-cha-changes.

John Legend once said, “Times is hard and things are a’changin’.” As we officially enter into 2007, that couldn’t be more true, especially for the Murphy brothers.

From the somber show opening, it’s clear that Hobo Radio has changed forever. It seems Joel has moved far away from Wyomingland, a change that has shaken up his brother so much that he no longer finds comfort in Guitar Hero. Instead, Brian has found a new way to ease his pain – the Xbox 360.

Week 27 Spotlight: Black Christmas.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Radio stations are playing holiday music around the clock, people are focusing on office parties instead of actual work and mistletoe gives even Ned Bitters a chance for some action.

That is why the Murphy brothers are in their full-fledged holiday moods – Joel is happy for the holidays and Brian is pissed off about … well, who knows. Joel focuses on the best Christmas has to offer, while Brian rants about idiots and their video-game related injuries.

Week 26 Spotlight: Bizarro world.

It seems things are not quite right on this week’s Hobo Radio podcast. Up is down, left is right and things are completely out of whack.

Most weeks, Brian Murphy spends his segment ranting about something that has pissed him off, while Joel brings up something topical and then opens his segment up for discussion. But this week, the roles are reversed. Joel rants about his recent flight to Boston, while Brian asks his brother about relationship deal breakers.
