Week 90 Spotlight: We’re all Bootsy

To say that it’s been a tragic week in Hollywood would be an understatement. First, Ed McMahon passed away. Then, Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer. And the biggest shock of all came hours after Fawcett’s death when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, died after an apparent overdose on painkillers.

Pizza Hut, on the other hand, has never been cool. They sell greasy food to lonely people who aren’t worried about their health. However, this week they tried to market themselves as a hip company by rebranding themselves “The Hut.”

Week 84 Spotlight: An important announcement …

As you have no doubt already figured out, there is a formula to these Hobo Radio podcasts. Every week, John Cleese plugs The Podcast Network. Then we play a funny soundbite. After that, our funky music starts up. Then Brian Murphy introduces Joel Murphy, there is a round of applause and Joel says, “Thank you, thank you, I am Joel Murphy …” and proceeds to introduce Lars and the show. After that, hilarity ensues.

Things started off so well this week. Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle started this week’s show with a lighthearted discussion about wacky morning DJs, then shared their thoughts on NPR, Smart Cars and local sports. However, as the dynamic duo began discussing car thieves, the conversation took a turn and Joel began to get angry.

Normally, the weekly contractually-obligated Batman discussion would have been enough to lift Joel’s spirits, but the news that gamers could only play as The Joker in the Playstation 3 version of Batman: Arkham Asylum put him further over the edge. A few moments later, Murphy snapped and began berating you, the listener, in a lengthy tirade.

For the first time in history, the Los Angeles Times ran a front-page ad that was made to look like a legitimate news story, a move which upset readers and journalists alike. The ad in question was for the NBC show Southland and it was laid out to look like a news article written by a reporter who completed a ride-along with one of the show’s main characters.

This week, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle take a look at this controversial decision and what it might mean for the future of print journalism. They also talk about advertising on DVDs, which is getting out of control. Somehow, they also find the time to discuss The Office and the new Batman video game, Arkham Asylum.

Week 81 Spotlight: Radio killed the radio star

Driving from Boston to Virginia, Joel Murphy had a chance to sample the radio stations in several states and unfortunately he discovered that they all play the same exact music. From Jason Mraz to Lynyrd Skynyrd to George Michael, the same exact songs by the same artists kept cropping up over and over again in every state. Murphy believes that market research and a lack of creativity have ruined radio.

Meanwhile, Lars Periwinkle is dealing with his own problems - namely, the DMV. Periwinkle went into the DMW to fix what should have been an easy problem and left there five hours later with nothing resolved.

Last night, Barack Obama was the first President to go on The Tonight Show while still in office. While it was sold as a historic moment, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle are having trouble understanding why it happened.

Between his Tonight Show appearance and the countless press conferences and prime-time preemptions, President Obama has been all over television lately. Joel and Lars can’t help at times but feel like the President is acting more like a celebrity on a press tour than the most powerful man in the entire world. This week, they try to figure out why Obama has been on TV talking about his bowling score and his NCAA picks instead of fixing the country.

Week 79 Spotlight: You can’t do that on television

In this post-Janet Jackson “Nipplegate” world, there are joyless organizations like the Parents Television Council that watch hours and hours of television, seeking out shows that offend them. Then, these organizations write letters to the FCC, complaining about the content of the shows that they only watched in the first place because they were hoping to find offensive content.

The latest show to find itself in PTC’s crosshairs is Family Guy. According to the organization, this past Sunday’s episode of the Fox cartoon “treated viewers to everything from an ‘eleven-way’ gay orgy to baby Stewie eating a bowl of cereal with horse sperm instead of milk … if that isn’t enough, the show’s leading character is also shown fanaticizing about his wife and moaning while a horse licks his bare behind. Clearly, the explicit content was not isolated to one instance in one segment of the show; it permeated the entire program.” Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle discuss Family Guy and the PTC’s complaints in this week’s show.

Week 78 Spotlight: Why aren’t we watching the Watchmen?

Today, Watchmen hits theaters and surprisingly, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle aren’t camped out in front of a multiplex. It seems that our nerdy co-hosts are excited about Watchmen, but they just can’t muster the energy to go out and actually see the film this weekend.

Week 77 Spotlight: Why so serious?

This week, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle attempt to do something unprecedented - they attempt to have a serious discussion about a sensitive topic.

After seeing a preview for the new Robert Downey Jr./Jamie Foxx movie The Soloist, a film about a white journalist who befriends a homeless African American musician, Lars Periwinkle felt the film appears to be another example of what is often referred to as the “magical negro” phenomenon in movies. A “magical negro” is an African American character who mysteriously appears in a film with the sole purpose of aiding a white character along in his journey. This week, Lars and Joel examine this trend and attempt to figure out why it is so prevalent in movies.

Can the dynamic duo handle having an actual serious and thoughtful discussion? How did they spend Valentine’s Day? And what ever happened to the sushi-eating Batman who was arrested in Florida? The answers to these questions and more are in this week’s podcast.

From the moment he first arrived on screen claiming to be an innocent balloonist marooned on the island, Benjamin Linus has been an unstoppable force on Lost. Week 75 Spotlight: That’s f’ing distracting!

When Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott’s car went missing, it was the beginning of a wacky and unpredictable journey involving aliens and crazy cult members. When Lars “Don’t Call Me” Periwinkle’s car mysteriously disappeared one morning, it wasn’t nearly as fun.

After filing a police report, Lars was forced to adjust to a world without a car. Week 62 Spotlight: Do you believe in magic?

In his latest publicity stunt, David Blaine suspended himself upside down for 60 hours, then did a “dive of death” in front of a live crowd. Only he didn’t actually hang upside down for 60 straight hours; he took 10 minute breaks every hour. And he used a harness for his “dive of death,” which stopped him from falling well before he reached the ground. The stunt was capped off with him “flying away” while still attached to the harness.

While the stunt only earned ABC 7.7 million viewers for the night, clips from the two-hour special surfaced on the Internet and news outlets gave Blaine the publicity he was so desperately speaking. Even Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle can’t resist talking about him on this week’s show, even though they both agree that the guy needs to stop doing these ridiculous and unsatisfying stunts.

Week 35 Spotlight: Hugs, not drugs.

Brian and Joel Murphy have always believed that being drug free is the way to be. Growing up in the 80s, they were subjected to countless after-school PSAs and “very-special” episodes of their favorite sitcoms (including the “I’m So Excited” episode of Saved by the Bell) and they quickly learned that drugs were for losers.

Week 34 Spotlight: Sometimes an onion ring is just an onion ring.

… No, we’re not talking about Hobo Radio. The show referenced above is The Sopranos, whose creator, David Chase, just released a book berating fans for getting so obsessed with the season finale, while still only offering vague clues as to what the bizarre ending meant. Needless to say, this makes Joel Murphy angry - angry enough to bring back Hobo Radio just so he and Brian could yell at the pretentious douchebag who created The Sopranos.

Week 33 Spotlight: Two weeks in a row.

Last week, Hobo Radio made it’s triumphant return to The Podcast Network. However, many fans feared that this reunion show was a one time deal and that the Murphy brothers would once again, as Mike Tyson would say, “fade into Bolivian.”

But this week, they prove all of the doubters wrong by returning with another all new podcast. While it is still unclear what has motivated the Murphys to return to the airwaves, rumor has it that some encouraging words by Lance Armstrong in a hotel bar really put things into perspective for them.

Week 32 Spotlight: Our triumphant return.

On February 22, due to technical difficulties, Hobo Radio went off the air.

Most loyal listeners presumed Brian and Joel had “pulled a Bubby” and would never be heard from again. But this week, they make their triumphant return.

Is the magic still there? What were the real reasons for their hiatus? And what, exactly, is a RoboTron 4000? The answers to these questions and more lie within this week’s Hobo Radio podcast.

Since I moved to Boston, we have been having some audio problems and the sound quality just hasn’t been up to our normal standards. So, for now, we are on hiatus while we try to work out the kinks, but hopefully we will be back on the air soon.

Week 30 Spotlight: A tale of two cities.

Week 26 Spotlight: Bizarro world.

Week 25 Spotlight: Trouble in paradise?

Week 24 Spotlight: Love and marriage.

A one-year wedding anniversary is considered the “paper anniversary.” And if Brian Murphy had his way that paper would be a note telling his wife that they can meet up to celebrate year one after the football game.

You see, while Brian should be happy his wife is willing to celebrate the couple’s first anniversary at a professional sporting event he finds himself making a difficult decision – keep her happy and attend the game with her in the nosebleeds or blow her off and take photos on the sideline. This kind of stuff was never discussed in premarital counseling.

Did Brian give his wife the “Heisman” and blow off their first anniversary? Could a livelong sports fan pass up an opportunity to be on the sidelines of a professional sporting event? Week 21 Spotlight: Blow my candle.

Kids growing up, and especially high schoolers, will gladly tell you that only one birthday truly matters – the big 21. Forget being old enough to get a learner’s permit or being eligible to vote, once a guy can buy his own beer (legally) life is worth living.

So it comes with great pleasure that the folks at HoboTrashcan and The Podcast Network present the highly anticipated 21st episode of Hobo Radio. What started out as a poor, misguided delinquent of a podcast as evolved into a … well … a slightly older, and yet still poor and misguided Internet show.

Week 20 Spotlight: Bullsh*t bullsh*t.

The great American dream can come in many forms. For some, that means living debt free on a nice coastal resort with a mixed drink in one hand and a beautiful companion nearby. For the Murphy boys, it’s simply not having a boss to appease.

Within a 24-hour span, broadcasters Steve Lyons and Lamar Thomas were both fired because of comments made on the air. Lyons was accused of making racial insensitive comments, while Thomas suggested that he should leave the booth during a football game to throw down with some of the players.

Week 19 Spotlight: Gender fender bender.

Week 15 Spotlight: Machine head.

Week 14 Spotlight: They call him trendy.

Week 13 Spotlight: The final meltdown.

Brian Murphy has been playing hockey for years, but only recently did he come to the conclusion that he’s somehow ended up on a team filled with cartoon characters. He’s not complaining, if anything, it makes for entertaining games.

The hockey team, called The 5 Holes, was created in 1998 by guys named Millhouse and Woody. While they may not be the most talented players to ever lace up a pair of skates, they are without question the emotional leaders of the team. And with a motto of “we’re not that good,” the bar is set pretty low with this team. So when they made it to the championship game this year, they seemed destined for failure. And, of course, they didn’t disappoint.

Week 8 Spotlight: To key, or not to key.

Most soldiers have war stories, but Brian Murphy isn’t like most soldiers. His military stories are a little bit different. Listeners know about the time he got a drill sergeant a stripper, but that’s nothing compared to what happens when he stumbled across “magic keys.”

What started out innocently enough, quickly spiraled out of control. While at advanced individual training, Brian found a set of keys sitting on top of one of the washing machines. These were no ordinary keys though - they were a set of master keys that unlocked every room in the barracks. Suddenly, he was left with a moral dilemma.
